Intercom alternatives: the real options, and what they cost

Intercom is a genuinely strong product that a lot of teams still leave — almost always over price shape rather than quality. Here is what it costs, what the honest alternatives cost, and how to tell which one fits.

Quick answer

Intercom costs $29 (Essential), $85 (Advanced) or $132 (Expert) per seat per month, plus $0.99 per resolution for its Fin AI agent, with a 14-day trial and no free plan. The strongest alternatives with published pricing are Tidio (free tier, Starter $290/year), Crisp ($45–$295 per month per workspace rather than per seat), LiveChat ($19–$79 per seat per month) and Chatbase (AI answering only, free to $400/month). Checked August 2026.

Why teams look for an Intercom alternative

It is rarely about capability. Intercom’s pricing page (checked August 2026) lists Essential at $29, Advanced at $85 and Expert at $132 per seat per month, with the Fin AI agent charged separately at $0.99 per resolution. There is a 14-day trial and no free plan.

That structure has two edges. Per-seat pricing means the bill grows with the team even if the workload does not, and support teams tend to have a lot of seats. Meanwhile outcome pricing for Fin — you pay when it actually resolves something — can genuinely work out cheaper than a per-seat AI add-on at high volume. Whether Intercom is expensive depends on which of those dominates for you.

The other common reason is scope. Intercom is a full customer-messaging platform. If you are using perhaps a fifth of it as a chat widget with an AI answering layer, you are paying platform prices for a feature.

To be fair to Intercom: Fin is one of the strongest AI agents on the market, and the Advanced and Expert tiers include 20 and 50 free Lite seats respectively, which softens the per-seat maths for teams with lots of occasional users.

Intercom alternatives, compared

These are the products that genuinely do the same job — a chat widget on your own website, with a support inbox and an AI layer behind it. Prices are as published by each vendor in August 2026.

Intercom (opens in a new tab)

The baseline you are comparing against — strongest AI agent, highest price.

Best for
Small teams that would rather not pay per seat as the team grows.

LiveChat (opens in a new tab)

Pricing
Starter $19/month billed annually ($25 monthly). Team $49 and Business $79 per person/month billed annually ($59 / $89 monthly). 14-day trial, no free plan.

Build AI support agents trained on your own content and deploy them across chat, email and messaging apps.

Pricing
Free (50 messages/month, 1 agent). Hobby $32, Standard $120, Pro $400 per month; 20% off annual. Extra credits $40 per 1,000 messages.

How to choose between them

Your bill is a seat problem

Crisp is priced per workspace — $45 to $295 a month with 4 to 20+ seats included and extra seats at $10 — so a growing team does not linearly grow the invoice. That is the clearest structural escape from per-seat pricing.

You want to start at zero

Tidio and Crisp both have free plans, and Chatbase has a free tier too. Intercom and LiveChat do not — both offer a 14-day trial instead.

You only wanted Fin

If the AI answering is the part you value, a dedicated AI agent is far cheaper than the platform underneath it. Chatbase starts free and runs $32 to $400 a month by message volume.

Humans answer most of your chats

LiveChat is built around people first, with AI as a helper: $19 a month flat for Starter, then $49 and $79 per person per month for Team and Business on annual billing. If your team wants a fast human inbox rather than a deflection engine, that is a better shape.

Do the volume maths before you switch

Fin at $0.99 per resolution can beat a flat AI add-on when volume is low and lose badly when it is high. Multiply your monthly resolved conversations by $0.99 and compare that with Tidio’s or Chatbase’s message-bucket pricing before assuming Intercom is the expensive one.

When Bl1nk is the right answer instead

Bl1nk does not compete with Intercom, and swapping one for the other would be a mistake. Intercom sits on your website and handles support at scale; Bl1nk’s AI assistant sits on a digital business card profile and handles the questions people ask when they meet you. We are on this page for one specific reader: someone paying platform prices for a chat widget whose inbound does not actually come from their website.

What Bl1nk will not do
  • It lives on your Bl1nk profile — the page someone opens after tapping your card, scanning your QR code, or clicking your link. There is no script tag and no way to embed it on your own website.
  • It is text only. It does not answer phone calls and it does not make them.
  • It never prospects. Nothing here sends cold email or works an outbound list.
  • It answers only from the knowledge you give it — your website pages, uploaded documents, and Q&A pairs — and says it does not know rather than guessing. That is deliberate, but it does mean you have to feed it.
  • Free plan: 300 AI credits a month. Pro: 10,000 credits at $5 per seat per month, or $48 per seat per year. There is no free trial of Pro — the free plan is the trial.
Where it does fit
  • You are a small team, a founder, or a field-facing seller — and the people you want to answer are ones you met, not anonymous website traffic.
  • Your "support volume" is really a handful of repeated pre-sales questions: what you do, whether you cover their case, what it roughly costs, how to book time.
  • You want the outcome to be a captured lead with a conversation summary, not a ticket in a queue.
  • A per-seat number closer to $5 than $85 is the difference between rolling this out to the whole team and not bothering.

See it working before you believe any of this

Frequently asked questions

How much does Intercom cost in 2026?

Intercom’s published pricing (checked August 2026) is $29 per seat/month for Essential, $85 for Advanced and $132 for Expert, plus $0.99 per resolution for the Fin AI agent. Advanced includes 20 free Lite seats and Expert includes 50. There is a 14-day free trial and no free plan.

What is the best free alternative to Intercom?

Tidio and Crisp both publish genuine free plans. Tidio’s free tier covers 50 billable conversations a month with 10 seats; Crisp’s free tier covers 2 seats with the website chat widget and shared inbox but no AI credits. Chatbase has a free tier too, but it is an AI agent rather than a full support inbox. Checked August 2026.

Is Crisp cheaper than Intercom?

For most team sizes, yes, because the pricing shape is different: Crisp charges per workspace ($45, $95 or $295 a month, with 4, 10 or 20+ seats included and extra seats at $10) while Intercom charges $29 to $132 per seat. The crossover depends on seat count and how much AI volume you run.

What is a cheaper alternative to Intercom’s Fin?

If AI answering is the part you need, Chatbase (free tier, then $32 to $400 a month by message volume) and Tidio’s Lyro (from $32.50 a month for 50 conversations) are both far cheaper than a full messaging platform. Whether they beat Fin’s $0.99-per-resolution model depends on your resolution volume — do the multiplication first.

Can Bl1nk replace Intercom?

No. Intercom is a website support platform; Bl1nk’s AI assistant lives on a digital business card profile and cannot be embedded on your website. They solve different problems. Bl1nk only makes sense if your leads come from people you meet or links you share, and you want an assistant that answers their questions and captures the contact.
